Position Summary

The Building Engineer ensures that Gathering Waters’ facilities are safe, clean, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, and the community. This position is responsible for routine maintenance, preventative care, repair of building systems, oversight of vendors and contractors, and maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations related to facility operations.

The Building Engineer plays a key role in the day-to-day stewardship of both school campuses and contributes to planning and governance through committee participation.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage and operate the school’s work order system, prioritizing requests based on urgency and safety.

  • Evaluate facility concerns and determine whether issues can be resolved in-house or require vendor support, providing direction and site access to contractors and vendors as needed.

  • Perform routine repairs to building systems, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.

  • Maintain landscaping and grounds at the Lower School campus.

  • Regularly inspect exterior building areas to ensure walkways, entrances, and exits remain clean, safe, and accessible.

  • Support janitorial tasks and emergencies during school hours.

  • Support snow removal and plowing efforts; escalate contractor performance issues to the Business Manager.

  • Coordinate and schedule contractor activities, ensuring adherence to school routines, safety requirements, and scope of work.

  • Assist the Business Manager and Principal with inspections, documentation, permitting, and compliance with regulatory mandates (including OSHA, AHERA, and local code requirements).

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and functional workshop used by staff and students.

  • Provide regular updates on facility conditions, preventive maintenance needs, and vendor/contractor performance.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction, facilities management, or a related trade.

  • Ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve issues involving building structural systems, plumbing, and electrical components or coordinate with relevant vendors or specialists.

  • Working knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and facility safety standards.

  • Proficiency with computers, including Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets).

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks based on urgency.

  • Detail-oriented with an eye toward function and aesthetics.

  • Interest in Waldorf educational model, experience working around children, team player.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to work on feet for extended periods and perform physical labor as required.

  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and navigate tight spaces safely.

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment

The position operates primarily on school campuses with frequent interaction with faculty, contractors, and students.

Salary

$42,000–$52,000
